Not all of the south island is mountainous, at the base of these monsters there are serene lakes, rivers, glaciers and coastal scenery to gladden the eye. There are many huge glaciers such as 'Fox' glacier seen pictured here below left.

The glacier is always moving downwards and the water that finds its way into rivers such as the 'Hooker' river (above), ends up flowing into beautiful lakes such as Lake Wakapitu seen here below (left) and Lake Matheson (right).

When I took this picture the morning temperature was minus -4 degrees Celsius. Very fresh and invigorating !!
